Hi Trek TV Friends,
Red giants are what become of main sequence stars like our sun. Normally they wither into white dwarves as Jared suggested and if too big, they do, as proposed by Vaughn, become black holes or at the very least neutron stars. Way to get the science right guys.
I appreciate that Star Trek portrays a universe where pure research is valued although it's a shame how often the scientists are painted in shades of Frankensteinian obssesion.
This is written in responce to the season 3 premier "Evolution". That episode from 1989 introduced me to the concept of 'nano' tech. I'd been keeping some distance between myself and sci fi at the time, immersed in philoosphy which apparently teaches nothing.
