Whom Gods Enjoy
From: Marc Thomas
Hi Trek TV Friends, Whats going on here? Did Fred Friedburger go over to the Batman sound stage one day …. lure the cast into an ice cream truck… then haul them over to Desilu? Actual Desilu had been consumed by Paramount at this point but it's more fun to say, Desilu! For the third time in a row, a major guest star, this time Yvonne Joyce Craig, who plays Marta here, was also an occasional character in that shows stable. In this case, Commissioner Godon's swingin' hottie daughter who was also, and secretly, Bat Girl. Who knows if she ever grew up and became Bat Woman. For me, Batman without the camp is just an adult in a costume trying be taken seriously. But I've heard good things about some of the films from the last 20 years or so. I'm just not a comics nurd anymore but when I was, strictly DC. "Whom Gods Destroy" really feels like a vintage Batman episode too. It's a schlockie third season re-do of season one's "Dagger of the Mind" Theres even a torture chair. I don't mind and I know there are only so many sci fi plotlines out there. That may be or not be but I'll bet there are more than 79 sci fi plotlines No matter, we have over the top acting and a colorful menagerie of interspecis skullduggerites, an Andorian, a Telerite an Oriion bikini babe and a Human who wheres mismatched Uggs ! Groovy, and how! Until the incongruent death of Marta. I'm sorry but you don't kill the funny villainess in an episode like this. Ok, fine, but if you do, at least do so with a giant cartoonish puff of pink gas…deal? Thankyou. Heres my fairly random assortment of observations, let's see how many match points interest made by this weeks Trek TV podcast crew. *I think its great that we have one more Kirk on Kirk battle before TOS is over. *There was also some mention of a Cochran deceleration maneuver, helping establish Zephram the Coch Man in cannon. *Best double neck pinch ever. * And Spock's mild dis of Marta's dance moves as comparable to those performed by Vulcan children! Holy sentence fragment! Will somebody with small children please pointilize your little darlings ear-tops then bring that scene to life for YouTube? Kaelin? Derek? Mr. Locke? No don't. That could jeopardize the franchise' survival into posterity. I like the way the governor of the colony is suspended in mid air, that was cool. I enjoy the gratuitous disrespect for gravity. Yeah take that gravity. We're coming for you next, you being, the other three fundamental natural interactions that have pushed matter around with impunity for far too long! Queens to Queen level 3? I have no idea what that means but I used to have smart friends who played verbal chess this way during the enforced celebration of stupidity which was called P.E. back in high school. Do you remember that Mr.. Locke? No, no. Mr Locke and I didn't play verbal chess. We were the dumb ones, but cute, cute as fuck ask anyone, no don't... Garth learned cellular metamorphosis? He does it with no techie gear, so I guess Art C Clarkes dictum that advanced tech is sufficient to look like magic, applies, thats fine. Notice how many times Kirk describes older mens exploits as as required reading at the academy? Has this ever been said of Kirk in later incarnations of Trek? If some young wipper-snapper says your lifes experiences are required reading at the academy, he's calling you 'old balls' so feel free, as I often do, to wave your cane menacingly as you demand that all such impudent scamps exit the perimeter of your lawn. Finally, the title derives from this proverb "Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad." which I always thought was a bit of old man Euripides senile blather, but according to wikipaedia that's wrong. What's right? Doesn't say, anyone?
