By the rivers of Zion
From: Colin H
Hi guys So after alienating all the German listeners and the wino's we get started, ah the joy of alcohol. The dating factor comes into this episode in the way that they are attacked by a dreaded nuke!. Which at the times was a feared weapon, with the cold war and all. But to be honest should not really be a bother to a starship. Still maybe Kirk was worried about the ship being blown into an upright position again. Blood flowing to your head can be a pain. Zion, to answer your in cast reference is Israel. Here's an extract from Wiki. Zion (Hebrew: ציון; Tiberian vocalization: Ṣiyyôn;transliterated Tzion or Tsion) is an erroneously transliterated term that most often refers toJerusalem and, by extension, sometimes to the Biblical land of Israel. The word is first found inSamuel II, 5:7 dating back over two and a half millennia. In Kabbalah the more esoteric reference is made to Tzion[1] being the spiritual point from which reality emerges, located in the Holy of Holiesof the First, Second and Third Temple. It commonly referred to a specific mountain near Jerusalem (Mount Zion), on which stood a Jebusite fortress of the same name that was conquered by David and was named the City of David. Don't you think Kirk made a very convincing Nazi, mind you they both like genocide. Ah Kirk the Nazi and Spock the thief, what wonderful training starfleet undertake. Don't think you can see Kirk as a Nazi. Well he pumps someone full of chemicals, then bitch slaps him, questions the crap out of him and finally watches him die. Sounds like a Nazi to me. But as to the war between the two planets, you have to ask how to relatively primitive planets manage to get to the inter planetary war stage. Even in the 70's there was no way NASA or the USSR, could have gone to that level. This despite many years of exploration and space endeavour, plus knowledge of nuclear power. Getting to the moon was itself a massive endeavour. So yet again the non religious man, gives us a episode with religious context. Plus yet another alternate Earth scenario. I tend to think after the gangster episode and this one, the federation should have a policy change. 1) No history books or books referring to old Earth allowed on away missions. 2) No history buffs or lovers of crap fiction allowed on away missions. This goes double for away missions involving Sulu, as they inevitably go wrong. 3) if the above are broken, Kirk to be dispatched to genocide the planet. Thus preventing further in system contamination. Anyway after listening to Vaughn constantly replenishing his oils. I feel the need to sooth my sore throat with something similar. Live long and podcast my friends. Colin.
