Kirk gets the Vapors
From: Marc Thomas
Hi Trek TV Friends, Kirk really doesn't give a shit about dying people who need medicine. Once again he ruminates upon bygone days and genocidal oppertunities lost. Eleven years ago, little baby Kirk was on the Farragut, wow. Back then Star Trek was just an old timey 50's radio serial. Similar to 'Conscience of the KIng', 'Obsession' finds the Captain's panties in a twist over a past he can't change and won't talk about. I almost never watch this one, none to fond of monster-movie style plot lines, where an intelligent being is afforded no moral agency of it's own. As proof of the fog's sentience mounts, so does Kirk's blood lust. It's not so much the moral issues raised, which bothers me, as the chance spurned, for good science fiction. I think, however, that the cast does fine work here, and it's quite a good character driven episode, if you like that sort of thing. As far as vampire story's go, I'll stick with Stoker. Did you know that Bram is short for Abraham? I Didn't. Until I did. Is Twilight still all the rage with 'tween age girls or is that over? All I know is that, for a while, in the sixties, this dreamy vampire cloud dominated the tabloids and all the bobby soxers and more than a handful of dirty old cougars were way into him. Is corpuscle a dated word? I learn the word 'intravenous' from Nurse Chapel's scene with Garavick. This happens so much when I watch TOS. I remember all the little things I learned from watching it as a kid. I learned nothing from Lost in Space. Did you know lobsters have green coppery blood like Mr. Spock? Apparently this is an old fashion type of hemoglobin, that was totally in vogue before our type of ironic red blood hit the scene. Red blood rules! And Gas Vamp's know it. I learned this from a science podcast but I won't plug it since they never mention TREK TV. Oh yeah! We're playing for keeps Dr. Smartypants. I tried to find out how Gassy McFume uses gravity to travel at warp speed by consulting 'The Wacky Fucking Hypothesis Science Journal's Archive' but no luck. How did it evolve to enjoy hemoglobin so much? 'Obsession' doesn't care, and if it's not my cup of tea, that's okay, The science at play in this piece of fiction is psychology, not bio-physics. Pouty and distraught, Garravic's 'dear diary' moment alone in his room was wonderfully retold and embellished by Jared, perilously close to composing slash/fic. Excellent co-hosting Jered. Make's me proud to be one quarter Canadian, as does Trek TV in general. God bless North America, and the horse it rode in on. Interesting, the way you briefly re posit the story as though it were a TNG episode. I really must concede that my high geekery for TOS, is a product of sentiment and emotional programing, because you were right,Jared and Vaughn, this would have been much improved by TNG-i-fication Oh, one last thing, I am NOT old enough to be Collin's parent. Just a quick correction, to an earlier email. And Hooray for all the other email. Hello again to Sharon, Julian, Kaylin and it was great to hear from someone new, Barry. Love the new Julep Julian. Galt is so-o-o bluffing, look at that twitch in his eye. Who did the gas vampire? Count Gasula the Gaspire. It's perfect. Welcome back to my iPod, Glad you had an awesome spring break, (gas fangs don't leave no) Marc(s) Thomas
